The Idea of Philanthropy in Muslim Contexts
By Jon B. Alterman and Shireen Hunter. Washington: Center for Strategic and International Studies, for USAID, 2004.
Giving has been at the heart of Islam for centuries. This report on the theory and practice of philanthropy in Muslim-majority communities says that giving is an integral part of religious and social life of the Muslim. Overall commitment to giving (which is, in fact, one of the five pillars of Islam) is clearly seen statistically. On average, Muslims give at least 10 percent of their income to religious and/or secular charities, totaling between $250 billion and $1 trillion annually.
