Vocational Training for the youth
The Ceylon Baithulmal Fund has launched the CBF Vocational Training Fund to cater, particularly, to a vulnerable segment of the Community. These are students who have studied in or up to the secondary level of their education but who are not qualified or otherwise unable to pursue their studies any further. They are quite a young crowd, mostly, in their teens. It is indeed dangerous to ignore this group. For, they not only become drop-outs and unfit for suitable or gainful employment but also a burden to their family and society at large. Experience also indicates that they also can end up in committing crimes and sins, in addition to becoming involved in drug related and other socially and religiously tabooed activities.
On account of this, an in house programme being conducted on a professional scale at the Handwork Centre, in Paiyagala, Kalutara, the CBF has arranged a batch of twenty students from the Kalutara District of Sri Lanka, to follow courses on:
It is hoped to arrange batches of twenty students at a given point of time. Other courses cover:
These courses are of short term and are of one week to six weeks in duration. The fees for these courses range between Rs. 10,000/= to Rs. 15,000/= ($85 to $150 approximate) per trainee. The discounted cost of a batch of 20 students for the CBF is Rs.250,000/= ($2500 approximate). This includes a payment of Rs.1000/= ($10 approximate) to each of the trainee to subsidize the traveling cost during the period of the course.
The Handwork Centre is a project of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka, National Construction Association of Sri Lanka and the Handwerkskammer Koblenz, Germany. At the completion of the respective Courses, Certificates signed by the three Organizations are issued to the trainees.
It is very much hoped that students being helped out by the CBF to be vocationally skilled and trained under this programme, would enable these students to find employment locally and abroad, in addition to alleviating the economic, social and other hardships faced by their respective families and society at large.
It is also proposed, Insha Allah to arrange batches on a regular basis and extend similar and suitable programmes to the other Districts of the country and to female students as well.
